How To Plan Your Perfect Honeymoon In Switzerland

Now that you know Switzerland is your perfect honeymoon destination, I know it might be hard to start planning. Where should you go, what should you do, and how to plan everything?

Don’t worry; imagine sitting in a travel agency and reading this article; you’ll get all the information you need. I’ll walk you through all the necessary steps to plan your Swiss honeymoon.

So let’s get into it.

How To Get To Switzerland

You can get to Switzerland by plane, train, bus, or car. Arriving from overseas, the best is to fly to Switzerland. Trains are a great flexible option in Europe, and the bus is the most affordable option for getting to Switzerland.

Flying To Switzerland

If you’re coming from overseas, look for flights to Zurich, Geneva, or Basel EuroAirport. These are the major airports in the country with many international connections.

If you’re looking for affordable flights, EuroAirport might have some great deals.

You can also book a flight to a nearby city in a different country, such as Munich (Germany) or Lyon (France), and take a train from Switzerland.

➑ Check out great flight connections & deals to Switzerland here.

Getting To Switzerland By Train

Taking a train is also a great option. Switzerland has one of the best railway systems in the world. So, if you’re coming from nearby European countries, check out trains.

I always use Trainline to book my train tickets as they have the best deals.

If you’re coming from Austria, look for Railjet. It’s one of my favorite trains.

➑ Check out the best train deals via Trainline here.

Getting To Switzerland By Bus

Bus travel is great if you’re on a budget. It’ll take longer than a train, but it’s usually cheap. Look for Flixbus, as they have connections almost everywhere, including Switzerland.

➑ Check out bus connections to Switzerland via Busbud here.

How To Get Around Switzerland

The best way to get around Switzerland is by train or car.

It depends on your preferences and the purpose of your visit. If you want to make beautiful road trips flexible and not depend on public transportation, rent a car for your honeymoon.

RENT A CAR FOR YOUR ITINERARY

Rent A Car Via Discover Carsbest prices and big selection of car rentals.
PRO TIP: Check ratings of the company you choose before booking (ratings can be off). Go on Google, see ratings of the car rental company, then book on Discover Cars.

Getting Around Switzerland By Train

If you want to enjoy stunning train rides in Switzerland, avoid driving through the mountain passes, or simply stay in one place and enjoy a spa hotel in a mountain town, then train transportation will be the best option.

My biggest tip is getting a pass if you choose to get around by train. Switzerland has many passes, such as Half-Fare Card, Saver Day Pass, Swiss Travel Pass, and regional passes.

is Swiss Travel Pass worth it me traveling with Swiss Travel Pass Flex
Me traveling with Swiss Travel Pass Flex in Switzerland

The rule of thumb is to get the Saver Day Pass if you only need to travel for a day.

A Half-Fare Card is great if you want to travel a bit and don’t want to do many activities.

Swiss Travel Pass is the best value if you want to explore Switzerland extensively, take panoramic trains, and do many activities.

Regional passes are the best if you stay only in one place/region. e.g. Switzerland, Davos/Klosters, Zermatt, etc.

What To Do In Switzerland For A Honeymoon

You can do so many things in Switzerland, depending on your preferences and interests. One evening, I sat down, pictured Switzerland in my head, and thought about the perfect activities for honeymooners.

I’ve come up with a list of these 11 great things that are a combination of romance, hiking and nature, stunning train rides, amazing spa and wellness, and romantic spots in the country.

These are the highlights and will be especially fantastic if you want to enjoy time with your better half.

So here is a list of the 11 great things to do in Switzerland during your honeymoon:

βœ… Ride A Panoramic Train
βœ… Fly Above The Mountains In The Jungfrau Region
βœ… Go Hiking
βœ… Stay In The Highest Hotel In The Swiss Alps
βœ… Treat Yourself In A Spa
βœ… Enjoy Mountain Excursions
βœ… Go Paragliding
βœ… Cruise On Swiss Lakes
βœ… Have A Romantic Dinner In The Mountains
βœ… Go On a Scenic Road Trip
βœ… Stroll Swiss Romantic Cities

βœ… Ride A Panoramic Train

Swiss panoramic trains are one of the best experiences the country offers.

Imagine sitting in a comfortable chair, sipping hot chocolate, coffee, or champagne, listening to a commentary, and staring at the beauty from the window. This is what a scenic train ride in Switzerland feels like.

There are 5 panoramic trains, but I recommend taking Glacier Express or Bernina Express.

Because the views from these two are the most breathtaking.

Landwasser Viaduct Glacier Express

βœ… Fly Above The Mountains In The Jungfrau Region

If you’re up for an adventure and thrill, visit Jungfrau region and Grindelwald First. Sign up for the adventure activities and have fun with your partner.

Fly above the Swiss hills with stunning views of the glacier and the mountains on a First Glider. And slide down on the First Flyer above Swiss meadows. It’s an unforgettable experience.

βœ… Go Paragliding

If you want even more thrill, go paragliding. Switzerland is one of the most iconic destinations for it. I recommend either Grindelwald or Zermatt.

Are you afraid? Don’t worry; your instructor will explain everything and care for you. You just have to enjoy the views and have fun.

βœ… Go Hiking

I suppose you like hiking and spending time in nature since you’re considering making Switzerland your honeymoon destination. Switzerland has truly some of the best hikes in the world.

And they’re not even that difficult. You can always take a cable car to avoid the steep sections and walk around up on the mountains.

The best hikes in Switzerland are in the Jungfrau Region, Zermatt, Andermatt, St. Moritz, and Flims.

is switzerland expensive cost of living
Me living and hiking in Switzerland (Jungfrau region)

βœ… Stay In The Highest Hotel In The Swiss Alps

I don’t know how about you, but staying in an alpine hotel and watching the stars at night with your partner (hopefully the weather is good) sounds like a great romantic time for me.

That’s why staying at 3100 Kulm Gornergrat Hotel above Zermatt might be the perfect activity for your honeymoon.

If you love mountains, stay in the hotel, enjoy the views of the Matterhorn mountains, and feel like a fairy tale, especially when all the other guests leave after the train ride closes.

βœ… Treat Yourself In A Spa

Switzerland has some of the best spa resorts in Europe. So it might be why you want to come here for a honeymoon. The Swiss know how to do hospitality and build iconic spa hotels in stunning locations.

So you might not want to do anything else. Just book a spa hotel and spend a few days relaxing and enjoying a couple of times in a whirlpool overlooking the Swiss mountains.

My favorite spa hotels in Switzerland are Chedi Andermatt, Park Hotel Vitznau, and Six Senses Spa in Alpina Gstaad Hotel.

Or scroll down for the best wellness hotels for more information.

βœ… Enjoy Mountain Excursions

If you don’t want to go hiking but want to enjoy some stunning mountains in Switzerland, you’ll love it. Switzerland has some of the most spectacular mountains, and they made it easy to access them.

Just take a train, cable car, or a funicular, and you’ll enjoy the Swiss beauty.

My favorite mountain excursions I recommend are Schilthorn, Mt Pilatus, and Jungfraujoch.

βœ… Cruise On Swiss Lakes

Cruising on Swiss Lakes is another fun activity you can’t miss when visiting Switzerland. You can plan to visit other places and sneak a boat ride into the day. Or cruise the entire day.

The most scenic Swiss lakes are Lake Brienz, Lake Vierstatter (near Lucerne), and Lake Geneva (Lake Le Lac).

And the best part about it? The boat rides are included in the travel passes.

If you want to stay next to a Swiss Lake, I recommend the Swiss Maldives Resort on the Neuchatel Lake, HΓ΄tel Palafitte.

Switzerland itinerary 8 days boat ride Lake Brienz
Me on the boat ride at Lake Brienz

βœ… Have A Romantic Dinner In The Mountains

Are you in for a romantic dinner in the mountains? You can match your time and stay at the place, too.

If you want to eat with your better half at a high elevation, overlooking the Swiss beauty, I recommend the following places: Restaurant Allalin (Saas-Fee), Mt. Pilatus, 3600 Kulm Gornergrat Hotel, or Schilthorn Mountain (360Β° Revolving Restaurant).

βœ… Go On a Scenic Road Trip

Is riding around and exploring places at your own pace something you enjoy? Then rent a car and road trip through Switzerland’s most iconic places.

The country has some of the most beautiful roads, and driving through the mountain passes feels like a different world. It’s only possible in the summer as some passes are closed in winter.

Here are some road trip recommendations for you:

🏞 Brienz – Grimselpass
🏞
Gletsch – Furkapass – Andermatt
🏞
Andermatt – Oberalpass – Flims
🏞
Thusis – Albula – Julierpass – St. Moritz

Me roadtripping through Switzerland

βœ… Stroll Swiss Romantic Cities

Choosing the right city as a base matters if you want to stay in a city and prefer doing day trips and excursions from there.

I don’t recommend spending much time in Zurich or Geneva. They’re beautiful, but there are many more stunning places in Switzerland since you already come here.

Instead, I recommend staying in Lucerne, Bern, or Montreux.

These cities are closer to the best attractions and mountain excursions in Switzerland, are more charming, and you can enjoy more activities nearby than from Geneva and Zurich.

They’re also more romantic cities, to be honest with you.

Practical Tips For Your Swiss Honeymoon

To help plan your honeymoon even more in detail, I’ve got some further tips for your visit. See when the best time to travel is, what to pack, and what budget you’ll need.

Best Time To Visit Switzerland For A Honeymoon

The best time to visit Switzerland for a honeymoon is June, September, and winter (December or January).

June and September are the perfect months overall, thanks to warm temperatures, great hiking and trip options, fewer crowds, and the landscape at its best beauty.

Switzerland in winter is also a great time for a honeymoon.

December and January are great if you enjoy snowy landscapes or even want to go skiing or winter hiking. Besides, you can enjoy even more alone time as there are fewer crowds and lower prices, especially in January.

Honeymoon Trip In Switzerland In November

November is a good time to visit Switzerland, but there are better ones. If it’s your honeymoon, I assume you want it perfect.

The weather in November might not cooperate with you. The weather is usually gloomy, and many things are closed due to maintenance or seasonal breaks.

Yet, if you want to book your honeymoon during Thanksgiving and don’t have any other option, it’s possible.

Refer to my article about Switzerland in November and see what you can do, where you can go skiing, and what is closed.

Honeymoon Trip In Switzerland In December

Switzerland in December is a great time for a honeymoon. Especially if you love snow and want to enjoy the winter landscape, you can go skiing in most places and enjoy Christmas markets and charming Swiss towns.

Besides, sitting in a whirlpool and watching the stars or the snowy mountains with lights; that’s super romantic.

What To Pack For Your Honeymoon Trip To Switzerland

Let’s talk about packing. Again, it depends on what you’ll do in Switzerland. But generally speaking, pack light, especially if you don’t have a car. You must get to your hotel by taking various trains, so you don’t want to carry heavy stuff around.

Pack hiking paths, sunglasses, sunscreen, a light waterproof jacket in case it rains, trekking shoes, a small backpack for your day trips, and a good mood.

For the winter, bring winter clothes, including a warm winter jacket with pants, winter shoes, a hat, gloves, and sunglasses (the sun’s reflection in the snow hurts your eyes).
