How To Get To Europe & Where To Start Your Itinerary

All European capital cities have international airports, so you can start anywhere and fly to your city. We’ll start this itinerary in London.

The best and most convenient way to get to London is by plane.

London has 4 major airports: Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick, and Luton. Heathrow is the largest airport, so I assume you’ll land there.

Even if you’re already in Europe and want to follow this itinerary, I suggest flying to London. The flights are affordable if you take any low-cost airline. These usually land at Stansted, Gatwick, and Luton.

Only if you’re in Paris, the best way to get to London is to take the Eurostar train. It’s convenient and fast. You’ll arrive in the center of London, St. Pancras station.

How To Get Around Europe & Make This Itinerary

The best way to get around Europe is by train and by car.

This itinerary will have a combination of both train travel and car travel. But most of it is designed as a road trip.

The only train you’ll take is from London to Paris at the beginning of the itinerary.

Afterward, you’ll rent a car in Paris and drive through Europe all the way south to Florence, Italy. Getting around by car will give you the most flexibility and help you visit those 9 countries in 2 weeks.

PRO TIP: Buy a Eurostar Train ticket for day 2. of this itinerary. Then rent a car in Paris on day 4. of this itinerary. Rent it for 10 days and return it on day 13 of this itinerary in Florence.

RENT A CAR FOR YOUR ITINERARY

Rent A Car Via Discover Carsbest prices and big selection of car rentals.
PRO TIP: Check ratings of the company you choose before booking (ratings can be off). Go on Google, see ratings of the car rental company, then book on Discover Cars.

How To Visit 9 Countries In Europe In 2 Weeks: Cities & Attractions

So now that we’ve got our 2-week Europe itinerary, let’s talk about each day, what to do, how to travel from one place to another, where to rent a car, and where you should sleep.

This will help you plan your trip much faster so that you can pack your bags and start your journey soon.

PRO TIP: For some attractions in each city, you’ll need to buy admission tickets in advance. I recommend booking the admissions before you travel.

Sights that need skip-the-line tickets are: London Eye, Tower of London, Sky Garden, Louvre Museum, Eiffel Tower, Seine River Cruise in Paris, Anne Frank House in Amsterdam with Canal Cruise, Duomo in Florence, and Uffizi Gallery.

For Anne Frank House, you must purchase the tickets at least 3 months in advance (they sell out quickly).

NOTE: A great way to see each city if you don’t have much time is by getting tickets for the Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus. You can see almost all the sights within one day and enjoy the city from the comfort of the bus. Plus you can learn a quick history about each sight.

Suggested Itinerary For 1 Day In London

Head to the Tower of London in the morning and explore its history. Take a few photos of the famous landmark, then take a metro to Westminster.

Once you’re at Westminster, you can see Westminster Abbey from the outside. Check out the Parliament, walk to the Westminster Bridge, and admire Big Ben.

Then turn back and go to James’s Park. Enjoy a beautiful walk through this spectacular park full of animals. You may be lucky to see a parade. Then, walk towards Buckingham Palace.

Take a metro to the Pickadily Circuit and experience the bustling side of London. Go shopping or have a late lunch in Chinatown.

After, hop on a sightseeing double-decker bus and see London from it. It’ll give you another perspective, and you can enjoy some English sweets with tea and coffee. You’ll have to book seats for the double-decker bus in advance. Check out my skip-the-line tickets for sightseeing in London below and book the tickets.

In the evening, go to the Sky Garden, enjoy stunning city views, and drink. Another option is to go to the London Eye instead of the Sky Garden. Once you finish, I recommend heading to the Camden Market. It has one of the best street food in London and great restaurants. Enjoy typical Fish & Chips at the Poppies Fish and Chips (in Camden).

This would be your perfect visit to London in 1 day.

MUSEUMS TO VISIT: British Museum & Natural History Museum.

2. DAY: LONDON β‡’ PARIS: EUROSTAR TRAIN

In the morning, you’ll take the famous high-speed Eurostar train. In under 2 hours and 16 minutes, you’ll admire the beautiful Eiffel Tower in Paris.

You’ll pass through the 50-km-long (31.5 miles) tunnel beneath the English Channel. You can’t see anything, but take your time to imagine where you are.

Once you arrive in Paris, you’ll still have half a day to explore it.

Take your time to check in to your accommodation and then head to the city. See at least one attraction this afternoon (I recommend the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre Museum). If you can see two, even better.

Leave the rest for day 3. You’ll have a full day to see the city again.

Evening Cruise On The River Seine

I highly recommend a Cruise on the River Seine in the evening. It takes one hour, and you’ll see all the famous attractions. You can either do just the sightseeing cruise or a Seine Cruise with a 3-course dinner.

PRO TIP: Start the cruise at 8:00 pm because it’s still light outside, so you can see every sight. Once you come to an end, it’ll get dark, and that’s when the Eiffel Tower starts sparkling with lights. It’s an incredible experience at the end of the cruise.

3. DAY: PARIS

Good morning to Paris. It’s much easier to navigate than London. Because the sights are closer, take advantage of your full day in Paris to see it all.

Here is my suggested itinerary for a day in Paris:

First, check out some of the museums you want in the morning, including Notre Dame.

Around lunchtime, head up to the Montmartre area and get some food. It’s one of my favorite areas in the city, with painters on the streets and cute French restaurants. Afterward, check out the Sacre-Coer Basilica, which has incredible views of Paris.

Paris Louvre Museum
Paris – Louvre Museum

In the afternoon, walk up the Champs-Γ‰lysΓ©es Avenue and get a French crΓͺpe in a stall. Then, visit the Arc-de-Triomphe and learn about the history of the unknown soldier.

After, it’s time to return to the Eiffel Tower and enjoy a delicious French picnic. Buy a French baguette, cheese, and wine, sit down on the Champs de Mars Park, and enjoy the beauty of the Eiffel Tower.

Evening Moulin Rouge Can-Can Show

In the evening, you can attend the Moulin Rouge performance. It’s a typical French Can-Can show with actors dancing in beautiful costumes and a few acrobatic shows you’ll love.

4. DAY: PARIS β‡’ BRUSSELS β‡’ AMSTERDAM

This morning, you’ll have to rent a car in Paris (for 10 days). You can do so even the evening before if you have time.

Once you have your rental car, it’s time to embark on the European journey.

Firstly, drive from Paris to Brussels.

Distance Paris β‡’ Brussels by car: approx. 3 hours & 45 minutes (312 kilometers/195 miles)

Brussels

Brussels is the capital of Belgium, so now you’re already about to visit your third country.

I suggest stopping the car in the center and exploring the city for 2 days. It’s small, so you can enjoy a few sights and have lunch (don’t miss out on local French fries, Belgian waffles, and chocolate).

Sightseeing In Brussels:

πŸ”† Town Hall
πŸ”† Manneken Pis
πŸ”† Atomium
πŸ”† Grand Place

First, I recommend walking through the center, seeing the Town Hall and the Manneken Pis (a peeing man). Then have lunch and try delicious Belgian sweets.

On the way to Amsterdam, you can stop to see the famous Atomium.

After lunchtime, drive to Amsterdam.

Distance Brussels β‡’ Amsterdam by car: approx. 2 hours & 45 minutes (210 kilometers/128 miles)

Amsterdam

In the evening, check into your hotel in Amsterdam. Then, go for a walk, have a nice dinner in an Indonesian restaurant, and get a first glance at the city.

For dinner, I recommend Long Pura Restaurant. It has a beautiful setup and a cozy atmosphere, offering rijsttafel and other classic Indonesian dishes.

PRO TIP: If you want to visit the Anne Frank Museum, you’ll have to book your tickets online at least 3 months in advance. Don’t rely on the chance that there might be some available. It’s barely the case. So get the skip-the-line tickets online 3 months in advance to secure your spot.

Something you can’t miss in Amsterdam is the Jordaan, a charming historic neighborhood with cute cafes and boutiques.

In the evening, go for a Canal Cruise. This is a must-to-do in Amsterdam.

Today, you’ll be driving from Amsterdam to Luxembourg City. You’ll step foot once more in Belgium on the way.

Distance Amsterdam β‡’ Luxembourg City by car: 4 hours & 50 minutes (411 kilometers/255 miles)

Luxembourg is a country (one of the richest in Europe), and the city is also called Luxembourg. So you’ll spend the afternoon strolling through its streets and experiencing the atmosphere of your new country (number 5 on our list).

8. DAY: LUXEMBOURG β‡’ ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER β‡’ SALZBURG

Today, we have another big trip crossing two borders. In the morning, have a nice breakfast, and then start driving. It’ll be a long drive, stopping in a German town on the way.

Firstly, you’ll cross the border to Germany. If you want, you can make any other stop in Germany. But I highly recommend stopping in a medieval town called Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Distance Luxembourg City β‡’ Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber by car: approx. 4 hours & 15 minutes (400 kilometres/248 miles)

Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

Rothenburg is one of the most romantic German towns, one of the most charming European cities. It’s tiny, so 2 hours are enough to explore it.

Have lunch in the town, and then continue driving.

Distance Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber β‡’ Salzburg by car: 4 hours & 15 minutes (400 kilometres/24 miles)

You’ll be crossing another border to Austria in the evening. Your destination is Salzburg.

In the morning, I recommend visiting Hohensalzburg Fortress. It’s the only fortress in Europe that wasn’t attacked or destroyed in the past. You’ll get the best views of Salzburg and learn about its history, so it’s a great introduction to your visit.

After, head back to the town and visit St. Peter’s Cemetery. Once you enter, you’ll see a mill with an old bakery on your left-hand side. Go inside and see how they make bread; it’s amazing.

Then, walk through the cemetery until you reach St. Perter’s Stiftskellerthe oldest restaurant in the world. If you want, you can have dinner there tonight.

Stop in the ASMANA Wellness World from Venice to Florence if you want.

I was amazed by this wellness paradise when I visited, and I highly recommend it. It has many pools, a poll bar, great saunas, waterfall showers, and massages. It also has a program for guests throughout the day.

We’ll spend our last day of this Europe itinerary in Florence for 2 weeks. It’s a gateway to one of the most beautiful regions in Italy: Tuscany.

I highly recommend staying longer and exploring some of the Tuscan highlights if you have more time. But let’s explore Florence first.

Practical Tips For Visiting Europe

To help you plan your visit to Europen even more, I have some more tips for you. See when the best time to visit is, what budget you’ll need, and get some safety tips.

Entry Requirements To Europe

When traveling to Europe, ensure your passport is over 8 months old. Many airlines won’t even take you on board when you have a passport that’s due to expire in 6 months.

You might need a Visa to enter Europe. Check iVisa if you need one. It’ll show you additional documents you’ll need to enter Europe.

Most European countries are in the Schengen Zone, meaning there are no border controls, and you can just cross from one country to another. With all the countries on this itinerary, you can freely cross without border checks.

➑ Check if you need Visa and other documents to enter Europe here.

Best Time To Visit Europe

Best time to visit Europe is April, May, beginning of June, September, and October. These months are less crowded than the summer, and shoulder months like April and October are also much cheaper.

I don’t recommend visiting Europe in the summertime, especially in July and August, as everything is crowded and overpriced.

It also depends on what you want to do. If you want to go hiking in the Alps, the best time would be the end of June, July, August, and September. Because these months are without snow and the mountain huts are open.

December is also a perfect time to visit Europe as you can enjoy its magical Christmas markets.

Budget You’ll Need For A 2-Week European Trip

The budget for a 2-week trip to Europe per person (mid-range traveler) is $3295. This is a very realistic budget for mid-range travelers who want to stay in nice hotels, rent a car to travel conveniently, and enjoy each location’s activities.

Here is a breakdown of this itinerary budget for each travel category:

➑ Accommodation: $80 per night p.p. (on average) in a nice mid-range hotel = $1120 per person
➑ Rental Car: for 10 days (Day 2. – 12.) = $1250 (couple)
➑ Gas: approx. 400 EUR for the entire trip (couple)
➑ Food & Drinks: $25 per day p.p. = $350 per person
➑ Activities & Attractions: approx $200 per person

So the total budget for a 2-week European trip (visiting 9 countries), without restricting yourself too much and enjoying everything the country offers, is $3295 per person.

Budget Breakdwon For Each Traveler Type

Here is a quick overview of a budget for every type of traveler:

➑ 10-day itinerary budget for backpackers and travelers on the budget: $1000
➑ 10-day itinerary budget for mid-range travelers: $3295
➑ 10-day itinerary budget for luxury travelers: up to $6000

NOTE: This is an approximate budget based on my calculations and spending during my trips in Europe. The budget will vary based on every traveler’s preferences.

Is Europe Safe?

Yes, Europe is a relatively safe place to visit. I’ve been traveling around for over 15 years, and nothing happened to me (I haven’t even been pickpocketed once). I always feel safe.

There are some potential crime and scams you need to be aware of. But if you use common sense, you’ll be safe and shouldn’t worry.

In big cities, be aware of pickpockets, when you’re traveling by metro or are in touristy areas, always keep your bags closed and your phones in a bag (not in your pockets).

But other than that, in most cities, you can walk outside at night without worrying too much.

FAQs

I’ve also answered some frequently asked questions about a 2-week European trip. Check my answers below:

How Much Of Europe Can I Travel In 2 Weeks?

You can travel almost half of Europe in 2 weeks. Visiting 9 to 13 European countries in 2 weeks is possible. You would need to rush a bit, but it’s possible. The best way is to rent a car, be flexible, and create your own schedule.

What Is The Best Way To See Europe In 2 Weeks?

The best way to see Europe in 2 weeks is by car or train. I recommend renting a car if you want to explore the hidden gems of Europe, mountains, and smaller towns. It’ll give you flexibility and trains won’t usually take you to the smaller places and mountainous areas.

If you want to visit bigger cities, the best way to explore Europe is by train.

How Many Countries Can You Visit In Europe In 2 Weeks From UK?

You can visit 9 countries in 2 weeks in Europe, starting in UK. You’ll visit the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and Italy.

Is 2 Weeks Enough To Travel Europe?

No, 2 weeks are not enough to explore Europe. Even though Europe might seem to be small, it has so many hidden gems and places to explore. So you would need at least a month to travel to Europe. Select an area of Europe you want to explore based on your interests, and book your trip.
