learning German language

I started learning German as my second foreign language (after English, my native language is Slovak). As a teenager, I knew that knowing languages would get me a lot further in life. I wanted to leave Slovakia right after high school, explore the world, and study in a different country.

I didn’t know where life would take me, but I started learning German in my free time. Fast forward to the end of high school, my heart guided me to apply for a tourism management degree in Austria, Salzburg. It was the right decision, so I applied and eventually got the spot.

I moved to Salzburg, Austria, as an 18-year-old girl and started a new life. My German wasn’t perfect, but I was so glad I learned some before coming there. It made my life significantly easier, as I had to navigate getting a new dorm room and my everyday life there.

Thanks to my German skills, I could also work and finance my University studies. It wasn’t easy, and at the beginning, I felt so little as I could barely understand the customers (I was serving at hotels or at big events around the city). But despite all the embarrassment I felt, I knew it was a lesson and the only way to improve my German.

You just have to go out there and practice, no matter what. Don’t be afraid; people will understand, be honest that you’re learning, and laugh at your mistakes. But if you never get out of your comfort zone, it’s difficult to master a language.

That’s how I mastered my German. Later, I also moved to Switzerland for three years and worked at the front desk in hotels for almost three years. I wouldn’t have gotten the job if I didn’t speak the language. It was difficult, but I did it.

So now, I’d like to motivate you to start learning German. It’s a big benefit if you can speak it. Get some of my materials, tips, and more insights into the German language below:
