The French language was an unexpected move for me :D. When I was 17, I decided to travel to the other side of the world (New Zealand) and spent half a year there, living with a local family and studying at a local high school.
It was a scary move, but some things back home didn’t feel right. I felt like I needed to find myself, discover who I really was, and decide what I wanted to do with my life. So I went. It was such an amazing time.
As I could choose some extra classes at the school, I thought, why not French? I had learned a few French words before when I visited Paris (it was always my dream). And I’ve always wanted to learn French. I just love the accent, and the fact that I could order my coffee and delicious croissant in French next to the Eiffel Tower motivated me. So, I started to take French classes and absolutely loved them.
After I returned to Slovakia to finish my last year at the high school, I wanted to continue learning French. So I asked one girl, and she helped me a lot. I learned a lot and could communicate.
However, as I moved on with life, started studying in Salzburg, Austria, and took Spanish classes, I didn’t dedicate much more time to French, so I forgot a lot of it.
Yet, I still know the basics and need to refresh my knowledge. Today, French helps me immensely (only if I just know the basics) at my work as a guide. When I have to communicate with French suppliers or bus drivers in Paris, knowing a bit of French helps me greatly.
I still plan to improve it in the near future and master it to fluency, as I did with other languages (English, German, and Spanish).
So, in this section, I’ll give you some tips on how to learn French, a few resources, and more insights into my learning process:
