βœ… Altstadt (Old Town)
βœ… Neustadt (New Town)

βœ… Maxglan
βœ… Nonntal
βœ… Salzburg Sud

βœ… Altstadt – Old Town

The Old Town in Salzburg is overall the best area to stay in. Everything is accessible on foot, and the atmosphere is magical. It feels like being transformed into medieval times, with horse carriages, beautiful sounds, and the bell ringing from the Cathedral.

You can enter the cobbled streets right after your delicious breakfast and head to explore the city, even before the crowds arrive.

The only disadvantage of the Old Town is that it gets crowded with tourists, especially in the summertime. And it’s hectic.

Best Hotels In Old Town Salzburg

I recommend the following hotels in the Old Town of Salzburg. I’ve selected luxury amd mid-range boutique hotels, as well as hotels and apartments for families:

Boutique Hotel Am Dom is a fantastic hotel to enjoy coziness in the city center, right at Residence Square. It’s a perfect base for exploring the Christmas Markets and the city. Rooms have Italian-style furniture, breakfast is served every morning, and a garage for parking is just 350 m away.

If you want to enjoy luxury with a personal touch, stay in the Small Luxury Hotel at the Goldgasse. It’s one of the most magical and tiny streets in Salzburg. The hotel has great staff providing exceptional hospitality. And the best part? The restaurant Gasthof is one of the best in Salzburg, cooking with fresh produce ingredients and local Austrian wines.

For those who prefer a chain hotel and know what to look forward to, Radisson Blue Hotel is set right in the city center of Salzburg, too. It’s set in a historical building dating back to 1377, so you’ll feel like a royal. The hotel also has some of the best views of the Old Town and the Salzach River.

If you’re looking for a nice hotel with modern furniture in the heart of the city, check out Hotel Elefant Family Business. Rooms have AC and comfortable beds with private bathrooms. There are also family rooms. Breakfast is included in your rate, and you can also enjoy their on-site restaurant. And the staff treats you like a family.

Do you prefer staying in an apartment that is centrally located? Book one at the Hapimag Ferienwohnung. The apartments have a kitchen with a coffee machine, dining area, spacious rooms with a lot of storage, living room, and bathrooms.

What I particularly like about these apartments is their elegant style.

βœ… Neustadt – New Town

The New Town in Salzburg is the second best area to stay in Salzburg. It’s close to the Old Town and the main train station and has great hotels whether you’re on a romantic gateway or want to be close to the sights.

Neustadt has the charming Mirabell Garden, where you can get stunning views of the Fortress. One of the good reasons for staying in this area is to wake up in the morning and enjoy a garden walk in a beautiful setting.

It’s also the starting point for the Sound of Music tours. And you can easily walk everywhere.

Best Hotels In Neustadt Salzburg

These are the best hotels in Neustadt and at the Salzach River with the best views of Salzburg. Most of them are luxury and some are mid-range. These hotels are great for those of you, who want to enjoy quietness and high-end facilities.

Hotel Stein is one of my ultimate favorites in Salzburg. It has a perfect location at the Salzarch River and between Neustadt and Altstadt, a cozy atmosphere, and the best terrace overlooking the city.

The rooms are comfortable with AC, and the staff’s hospitality is amazing. I love their terrace and always go there for coffee to stare at the city, even if I’m not a guest. It’s great for couples and a romantic gateway.

Another personal favorite of mine is Hotel Sacher. The difference from Hotel Stein is its location, right at the river, without the main street. So you can enjoy evening and morning walks alongside the river without bustling roads.

Hotel Sacher is one of the luxury hotels in the city with a historical style, spacious rooms, and AC. You can admire the original paintings and the personal touch of the hotel owner, Elisabeth. Moreover, you have to taste their original Sacher Cake, a typical Austrian treat.

If you’re more into boutique hotels, stay at the heart of Linzergasse at the Leonardo Boutique Hotel. You’ll be greeted with a welcome drink and a warm smile from the staff, who are super friendly. The rooms are stylish, and breakfast is included.
The hotel is close to the Kapuzinenberg, which also offers perfect city views and is a nice location for romantic evening walks.

Hostel Bristol is a 5-style luxury and historical hotel right at the Mirabell Garden, one of the most picturesque locations in the city. The style of this hotel is unique, with various historical paintings, decorations, and antiquities.

It’s a family-run hotel, and the staff ensures you have a perfect stay at all stages. Breakfast is included in your room rate, and you can enjoy a delicious meal in an award-winning restaurant. Besides, you can book a massage and relax in a local library.

βœ… Elisabeth Vorstadt

Elisabeth Vorstad is slightly away from the city center, but it’s a good area near the train station. It has a shopping mall with a cinema and is often less crowded.

This area used to be inhabited by the working class in the Middle Ages, and nowadays, it’s one of the cheapest areas to stay in Salzburg.

It takes between 30 to 40 minutes to reach the city center on foot. You can either walk through the Neustadt and visit sights like the Mirabell Garden on the way or walk alongside the Salzach River, which is beautiful.

Best Hotels In Elisabeth Vorstadt Salzburg

I’ve selected the best hotels in this area. Whether you’re on a budget, or you’re looking for some affordable mid-range hotels, you’ll find the perfect match here.

Hotel Zum Hirschen is my favorite hotel in the Elisabeth Vorstadt district. It has everything from a fitness room and spa to seminar rooms, stylish rooms, and delicious breakfast.
It’s the oldest family-run hotel in Salzburg, and one can feel that it caters well to its guests. Besides, the hotel has a perfect location, close to the train station and the Old Town.

Another great and modern hotel with unique decorations is located just a 15-minute walk alongside the River Salzach from the Old Town and a few steps from the train station.
Levi’s Rooms & Breakfast has some of the most spacious rooms ideal for families. And the breakfast is delicious with a wide range of local products. The staff is super friendly and ready to organize your activities.

Villa Elisa is a great apartment if you enjoy making tea and coffee or like to prepare small meals whenever you want. The apartments are equipped with a small kitchen, a coffee machine, and a kettle. Bed linen and towels are also included.

It’s in a quiet residential area with a small garden. The facilities are suitable for disabled guests, too.

a&o Salzburg Hauptbahnof is a typical budget-friendly hostel set at the main train station in the city (Ahuptbahnhof means train station). It’s a pet-friendly place with many facilities to keep you entertained throughout your stay. There is a billiard, a big satellite TV, and a bar. Sometimes, they also organize fun games so you can get to know other guests.

Maxglan is a quiet and safe area between the airport and the city center. While there are no historical sights you could explore, it gives you the convenience of being close to the airport if you have an early flight.

It has some interesting places to visit in Salzburg, like Hangar-7 and Red Bull. Hangar-7 has an exhibition of different vehicles and aircraft, which is pretty exciting.

The area also has budget-friendly accommodations, and you can easily walk to the city center in about 20 minutes.

Best Apartments & Hotels In Maxglan

For those of you who prefer staying in Maxglan, I’ve selected the best apartments and one hotel. They have excellent facilities and are great for families, solo travelers, or couples who want to enjoy their stay with a kitchen in Salzburg.

The Leopoldskron Palace is just 50 meters away, and you can enjoy many facilities such as Untersberg mountain or a tennis court just a 10-minute drive.
It’s particularly great for families or couples.

Another favorite apartment of mine in the city, the Ferienwohnung Untersbergblick, has 2 bedrooms with 1 bathroom, a kitchen, and a dining area. It offers everything you need for your stay as a family. Besides, the host also offers babysitting, which is perfect if you want to enjoy a romantic night and a bit of privacy, even if you’re vacationing as a family.

If you prefer a budget-friendly hotel, book Das Grune Hotel Zur Post. The property is 100% Bio using solar energy and generates electricity from the photovoltaic system.
What I love about this place is its delicious breakfast with regional products, homemade jams, and cakes. It’s super nice waking up to the delicious smell of the breakfast. Besides, there is a charging station for electric cars, and you can also rent bikes.

It also has great restaurants – my favorite is the Lemonchilli Mexican Restaurant.
