Dolomites is one of my absolute favorite destinations in Europe. I love it so much that I’ve moved here and have been living here for over a year now. Thanks to my home base and connections, I’ve explored the majority of these wonderful mountains, many areas, and hotels (I stayed in some of them myself).

1. Val Gardena

Val Gardea is a valley in South Tyrol, approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Bolzano. It’s a gateway to the Dolomiti Superski area, popular for skiing in the winter. Summer and fall seasons offer great hiking and rock climbing opportunities. The area has 3 main towns:

📍 Ortisei
📍 Santa Cristina
📍 Selva di Val Gardena

The best part of staying in Val Gardena is that you’ll get a guest card that you can use to travel on all public transportation (trains & buses) free of charge throughout your stay. The same applies to staying in Bolzano or Merano (and smaller towns between them).

You can reach Val Gardena by bus 350 or 360 from Bolzano or Ponte Gardena. If you’re taking a train from other destinations, you’ll get to Bolzano or Bressanone, and from there, you can change to these 2 buses.

By car, travel via the Brenner motorway (A22), and get off at Ponte Gardena, then follow the windy roads to the valley.

Main Towns & Bases In Val Gardena

The three main towns in Val Gardena – Ortisei, Santa Cristina, and Selva di Val Gardena – are all known for their long history of woodcarving, hospitality, skiing, and hiking.

Selva is one of the most popular villages in the Alpine region and has the highest altitude. Its location near Passo Sella and Passo Gardena and its iconic mountain passes make it an excellent base for exploring.

Santa Cristina is more off-the-beaten-path, offering a quieter atmosphere with easy access to the Sassolungo group and the Puez-Odle Nature Park.

Ortisei (also called Urtijëi) is the biggest village with the most restaurants, shops, and hotels, also the most popular. It’s great for families with children. It’s also home to the Val Gardena Museum and pedestrian shopping streets.

Highlights Of Val Gardena

Val Gardena is a perfect base for experiencing the best of the Dolomites.

Seceda is a must-visit – take a cable car to jaw-dropping panoramic mountain views. Make sure to visit Baita Sofia, a hut where you can sit on the grass and enjoy their amazing Apple Strudel while enjoying the views!

Another highlight is hiking and e-biking in Aple di Suisi, the highest alpine plateau in Europe. You can access it via the red cable car from Ortisei.

Ortisei, with its colorful houses and rich history, is another highlight for exploring the local shops and learning about the area’s traditions, like woodcarving.

From Selva di Val Gardena, you’re at the gateway to some of the most scenic mountain drives. The winding roads of Passo Gardena and Passo Sella will lead you to other stunning regions like Val di Funes and Alta Badia – driving through these mountain passes is one of my favorite things to do here. You can also take the local buses.

Val Gardena is beautiful and one of the most charming areas in the Dolomites. However, it’s getting very popular. So, if you want more quietness and peace for your stay, learn about the next area on my list.

2. Alpe Di Siusi

Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm in German) is the largest high-altitude alpine plateau in Europe. The southern part is located within the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park.

It’s accessible via cable cars from Siusi allo Sciliar (Seis am Schlern) and Ortisei (St. Ulrich). Private vehicle access is restricted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., except for guests staying on the plateau.

When I visited Alpe di Siusi for the first time, I fell in love. It’s one of the places that my heart is naturally drawn to, and I love coming back.

With its rolling meadows full of flowers, traditional alpine huts, and panoramic views of peaks like Sassolungo, Sassopiatto, Sciliar, Catinaccio, and Marmolada, it’s a haven for nature lovers year-round.

I spent 8 hours hiking around each day and getting lost in this calm nature. So, if you’re looking for a detox away from the crowds, this place is for you.

Highlights Of Alpe Di Siusi

Alpe di Siusi (Mont Sëuc in Ladin) is the perfect destination for nature lovers, outdoor adventurers, and honeymooners. It offers some of the most peaceful and uninterrupted nature in the Dolomites.

The meadows come alive with colorful wildflowers in June and July, and fall offers breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains.

Summer offers hundreds of hiking and biking trails. I suggest renting an E-Bike in Ortisei, taking the cable car up, and enjoying a day of biking around the meadows.

In winter, 21 ski and chair lifts connect a variety of slopes, including the renowned Alpe di Siusi Snowpark. It has more easy slopes, so if you’re looking for a challenge, this ski area isn’t for you. It’s great for beginners or families with children.

Moreover, it offers 80 kilometers of cross-country trails.

The area’s tranquil atmosphere, cozy alpine huts serving South Tyrolean specialties, and traffic-free environment. It’s the best place to reconnect with yourself in nature.

3. Val Di Funes

Val di Funes is a quieter and less connected valley in the Dolomites. It’s a better choice for travelers looking for a peaceful getaway.

This area is a great choice for families with kids who want easy hikes and ski slopes and amazing scenery..

Main Towns In Val Di Funes

The main towns in Val di Funes are

📍 Santa Magdalena
📍
San Pietro
📍
San Giacomo
📍
San Valentino
📍
Colle

Santa Magdalena is the most famous among these, thanks to its two iconic churches set against the dramatic Dolomite peaks and rolling green meadows.

The most famous is Santa Magdalena Church, which sits perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the Odle mountain range in the background.

Not far away is the Church of St. John in Ranui, which is a small, picturesque chapel surrounded by meadows – don’t miss this iconic spot.

Highlights Of Val Di Funes

One of the must-do activities in Val di Funes is the Panorama Trail in Santa Magdalena, an easy hike with views of the Odle mountain range. The trail is well-marked and accessible, perfect for visitors of all ages and fitness levels.

Another highlight is the Adolf-Munkel-Weg, often considered one of the most beautiful trails in the Dolomites. It’s a moderately easy hike runs directly beneath the Odle peaks, but I must say, since a lot of this hike was in the forest, it’s not my favorite.

Yet, it’s worth to visit the traditional alpine huts on the trail, such as Geisleralm and Dusler Alm and taste some South Tyrolean specialties like dumplings, strudel, and local cheeses.

You can easily access it via scenic mountain roads, with Passo Gardena connecting it to Val Gardena, Passo Pordoi linking it to Passo Sella, and Marmolada, the highest peak in the Dolomites, just a short drive away.

These connections make it an ideal destination for road cycling, motorbiking, and epic hikes through iconic Dolomite scenery.

The closest major city is Bruneck, a nearby entry point for arriving by train. You can reach Alta Badia by bus, car, or private transfer/taxi.

Main Towns In Alta Badia

The main towns in Alta Badia are the mountain villages of:

📍 Corvara

📍
San Cassiano

All of these feature gorgeous views and easy access to outdoor adventures.

Corvara is the best base for visitors who want to be in the center of everything, with the most well-connected lift systems, restaurants, and accommodations.

You can use local buses to get around. Still, I recommend having a car, as it’s best for fully exploring the mountain passes, hiking trails, and nearby valleys. As it’s in the middle of the Dolomites, away from major cities, you’d lose a lot of time waiting for the local buses.

where to stay in the dolomites alta badia best hotels

Highlights Of Alta Badia

This region offers some of the best hiking trails around the Sella mountain range, which features iconic peaks like Pisciadú and Piz Boé.

I highly recommend taking the Sass Pordoi cable car, which is known as the panoramic terrace of the Dolomites. From there, you can hike up to Rifugio Capanna Piz Fassa (I slept there for a night already twice, and it was so amazing), directly at Piz Boé (one of the highest peaks in the Dolomites).

The Armentara meadows are another must-visit, with picturesque landscapes and colorful flowers during late June/beginning July.

Alta Badia also has some of the best Via Ferratas like Via Ferrata Punta d’Isidoro, Via Ferrata Sass da Stria, Via Ferrata Tomaselli, and Via Ferrata Tridentina.

Mountain passes such as Passo Gardena, and Passo Pordoi is perfect for motorcycles and bicycling with panoramic views.

In winter, Alta Badia is a great ski and snowboard paradise. It has many different ski slopes, from easy to challenging, including a snow park. Corvara is a great base from which to start the Sellaronda circuit.

Cortina d’Ampezzo, also known as the “Queen” or “Pearl” of the Dolomites, is not only one of the most famous and accessible towns in the Dolomites but also one of the most famous mountain destinations in the world.

Located in the Veneto region, Cortina is situated in a wide valley surrounded by the jagged peaks of the Dolomites, including Tofane, Cristallo, Antelao, Sorapiss, Croda da Lago, and Croda Rossa.

Cortina is the easiest Dolomite destination to reach from Venice, which makes it ideal if you’re flying into Venice Marco Polo Airport. You can also take a direct bus (ATVO or Cortina Express) from Venice Mestre to Cortina in about 2.5 hours or rent a car and drive.

  • Tre Cime di Lavaredo: One of the most famous landmarks in the Dolomites that you can explore on a scenic loop hike starting from Rifugio Auronzo.
  • WWI History & Open-Air Museum: This area played a major role during World War I. You can walk through the restored bunkers, trenches, and tunnels at sites like Cinque Torri and Rifugio Lagazuoi. I highly recommend taking a cable car up from Passo Falzarego to Rifugio Lagazuoi.
  • Alta Via 1: One of the most popular hut-to-hut treks in the Dolomites, Alta Via 1 starts near Cortina at Lago di Braies. I hiked Alta Via 1 with my friend and we started in Cortina – it was one of the best experiences of my life.
  • Incredible Skiing & Winter Sports: Cortina offers 87 miles (140 km) of ski slopes, including the Faloria, Cristallo, Pocol-Tofana, and Cinque Torri ski areas for all ski levels. Unique ski routes include the Skitour Olympia, where the 1956 Winter Olympics were held, and the Great War Tour.

6. Val Pusteria

Val Pusteria forms the northern border of the Dolomites and extends from Lienz (Austria) to Mühlbach (Italy), an excellent addition to an Austrian trip!

The valley is also known for its history and culture. It was annexed to Italy following WWI, but around 80% of the population still speaks German and Austrian traditions remain strong.

The closest major airport is in Innsbruck (Austria), which is about 1.5 to 2 hours away by car. If you’re coming from Italy, you can easily reach Val Pusteria from Venice, Milan, or Bergamo by car or train.

The valley is also well-connected by train, and Bruneck is the main railway hub and biggest town. You’ll enjoy a scenic drive through the valleys with famous destinations like Lago di Braies and Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Main Towns In Val Pusteria

The main towns in Val Pusteria are:

📍 Bruneck
📍 Toblach (Dobbiaco)
📍 Sexten (Sesto)
📍 Innichen (San Candido)

Bruneck is the largest town and the best base for exploring the region, thanks to its central location, historical sites, and excellent transport connections. It’s also a great base for skiing in Kronplatz.

Toblach (Dobbiaco) is a cultural hub with access to both Tre Cime Nature Park and Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park to start your Alta Via 1 hike.

Sexten (Sesto) is a quieter alternative near Val Fiscalina, offering access to less-crowded trails leading to Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Innichen (San Candido) is known for its charming historic center and outdoor activities, including mountain biking and cross-country skiing.

hiking Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites

Highlights Of Val Pusteria

The region has beautiful alpine lakes, including the famous Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) and Lago di Dobbiaco (Toblacher See). You can enjoy easy walks and hikes, or take a boat.

Plan de Corones (Kronplatz) is of my favorite ski resorts in the Dolomites, a winter sports paradise with over 100 kilometers of slopes. In the summer, the area transforms into a hiking and biking destination with panoramic views.

Bruneck (Brunico) is a medieval town and cultural hub where you can explore the Bruneck Castle, Messner Mountain Museum, and a town center filled with local shops and restaurants. Don’t miss traditional Christmas markets in the winter!

Val Fiscalina & Tre Cime di Lavaredo is a gorgeous valley, the best gateways to Tre Cime Nature Park and features less-crowded hikes. You can hike to Rifugio Locatelli/Dreizinnenhütte.

Another thing you need to experience is a hay bath – unique history and tradition in South Tyrol. You’ll be wrapped in warm, moist alpine hay that contains medicinal herbs like arnica, thyme, and gentian. It stimulates circulation, reduces stress, and relieves muscle pain.

FAQs About Staying In The Dolomites

Let me help you choose the right area for your vacation based on your specific interests and needs. I’ve answered some of the questions that I often get from my clients, so check them out below:

Best Place To Stay In The Dolomites Without A Car

The Val Gardena region, especially Ortisei or Selva di Val Gardena, is the best option for staying in the Dolomites without a car. Hotels in these areas provide guests with a free public transportation card, which grants access to all buses in the Dolomites and trains to Bolzano and Merano.

You can easily take buses from these towns to other places in the Dolomites, such as Passo Sella, Passo Pordoi, Alta Badia (Corvara), and even Val Pusteria (Brunico).

Best Place To Stay In The Dolomites To Relax

Alpe di Siusi offers the most peaceful and relaxing escape in the Dolomites. It’s a high-altitude alpine plateau without traffic.

You can find spa resorts with pools and saunas, easy scenic walks, and the quiet nature free from crowds and city noise.

hiking in the Dolomites best hotels

Best Place To Stay In The Dolomites For Hiking

Cortina d’Ampezzo is the best base for hiking in the Dolomites because of the many trails, including the Tre Cime di Lavaredo from Rifugio Auronzo, Lake Misurina, Lake Sorapis, Cinque Torri area with Passo Falzarego & Lagazuoi, where you can explore WWI bunkers and tunnels.

Another great option is Val Gardena, which provides access to hikes in the Seceda area, Puez-Odle Nature Park, and Alpe di Siusi.

Where To Stay In The Dolomites For Skiing

For skiing in the Dolomites, the best areas to stay are:

  • Val Pusteria (Bruneck or Olang): Ideal for Kronplatz (Plan de Corones), one of the top ski resorts in the Dolomites (my second favorite).
  • Val Gardena (Ortisei and Selva di Val Gardena): Access to multiple ski areas and Sella Ronda, a famous ski circuit.
  • Alta Badia (Corvara): Excellent for a mix of scenic skiing and luxury accommodations with connections to Marmolada (highest mountain in the Dolomites and my favorite ski slope + Sellaronda connection).
skiing in the Dolomites Marmolada

Best Place To Stay In The Dolomites Close To The Lakes

Cortina d’Ampezzo is the best base for exploring the most lakes in the Dolomites including Lago Dobbiaco, Lago Misurina, Lago di Braies and Lago Sorapis.

Many of these lakes are accessible via short drives or hiking trails from Cortina.

Where To Stay In The Dolomites With Kids

Val Gardena, particularly Ortisei, is the most family-friendly destination. A great option is the Cavallino Bianco Family Spa Grand Hotel, which has childcare services, a kids’ room, and a large pool. The area also offers easy hiking trails, family-friendly activities, and easy access to ski resorts that cater to beginners.

Another great area for families with kids is Val di Funes, especially Santa Magdalena, for easily accessible walks (even with a stroller), stunning views, mountain huts, and quietness.

Practical Tips For Staying In The Dolomites

To help you prepare for your stay in the Dolomites, I also have some first-hand tips for you – see when to book and what to look out for, so you can have the most comfortable stay possible:

How To Get To The Dolomites

The fastest way to access the Dolomites is from Venice or Innsbruck (Austria).

From Venice, it’s only about a 2.5-hour drive to one of the main areas – Cortina d’Ampezzo, and from Innsbruck, you can reach Val Pusteria & Bruneck town within 1.5 hours.

Another close airport with great flights is Munich, which is about a 3.5-hour drive to Bruneck and Bolzano. Or Milano (if you’re heading to Val Gardena).

Best Time To Visit The Dolomites

June, early July, and September are the best months to visit the Dolomites in the summer. These months are less crowded than the busy summer months, and the nature is especially beautiful.

In June and early July, you’ll enjoy stunning greenery with meadows full of flowers (my ultimate favorite time). And in September and early October, the weather is still amazing, and you’ll love the beautiful autumn colors all around.

In the winter, the best time to visit is late December for Christmas or January. These months tend to have a lot of snow, and January is less crowded than the other winter months. February tends to be the busiest due to many ski holidays.

Alpe di Siusi best time to visit the Dolomites

How Many Days To Stay?

I recommend staying at least 7 days to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy these spectacular mountains. 7-10 days is the perfect amount of time to relax, go skiing, enjoy hiking, and visit some of the most iconic mountains with breathtaking views.

How Much Time In Advance To Book?

Hotels in the Dolomites sell out very quickly – it’s becoming increasingly popular. I highly recommend making reservations at least 6 months before your trip, or even 8 months.

I remember having some issues when I started planning my first trip, only 3 months beforehand. If you want to stay at one of the amazing hotels I recommend, start planning soon.

Top Tips For Booking & Staying In The Rifugios

You might already know that for me, one of the best adventures in the Dolomites is staying in a local rifugio (mountain hut). Just imagine hiking to the top, staying cozy at night, watching the stars, and waking up to an epic sunrise with a hot chocolate/coffee waiting for you inside a hut, prepared by local staff. There is nothing quite like that.

If you want to stay in the rifugios, I also recommend booking them at least 6 months in advance. Some of the most popular ones (like Rifugio Lagazuoi) sell out even 9 months in advance.

You can book the stay on their website or just email them.

The facilities are usually simple, but there is everything you need. Price includes your overnight stay with half-board. Some rifugios don’t have showers, or you’ll have to buy a token to use them. The higher the rifugio is, the simpler the facilities are (but the better the views and experience).
