Switzerland Christmas market itinerary

Welcome to the Swiss Christmas market itinerary edition. If you’ve been here for a while with me, you know how much I love Switzerland – and its Christmas markets are not an exception. I think they’re even more magical than elsewhere, thanks to the stunning nature and the winter wonderland.

I lived in Switzerland for almost 3 years and visited many Christmas markets across the country. And I think I found the most magical spots to visit during the Christmas time.

Let’s hit the road together and experience the magic!

Overview Of The Switzerland Christmas Market Itinerary

Here is a quick summary of this Swiss Christasy itinerary. Feel free to stay an extra day in some of these locations to get the most out of your Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss beauties around (I’d suggest an extra day either in Lucerne or Zermatt):

DAY:DESTINATION:
1.ZURICH
2.ZURICH β‡’ LUCERNE
3.LUCERNE & EXCURSIONS
4.LUCERNE β‡’ MONTREUX
5.MONTREUX β‡’ ZERMATT
6.ZERMATT
7.ZERMATT β‡’ GENEVA

How To Get Around The Swiss Christmas Markets

I’ve designed this itinerary to travel by train. Switzerland has the most efficient train system in Europe – it’s my favorite way to explore the country.

I recommend getting the 8-Day Swiss Travel Pass. It covers all trains, buses, and boats and offers up to 50% off all mountain excursions. Not only will it make the entire trip cost-effective, but it will be a lot flexible for you.

The pass serves as a ticket, so you don’t need to buy any extra tickets; just hop on all the trains I’ve mentioned in this itinerary and enjoy the journey.

NOTE: To check the train connections, go to the SBB website.

DAY 1. ZURICH

Welcome to Zurich – Switzerland. I hope you had a great journey and arrived safely. Take some time to relax at your hotel before we head to explore the city and its markets.

Today, you’ll have the entire day to soak up the atmosphere, do some sightseeing, try your first Swiss dishes, and experience your first Swiss Christmas markets.

Sightseeing In Zurich

Here are the things I recommend you explore in the city:

πŸ“ Zurich Old Town
πŸ“ Bahnhofstrasse – main shopping street with high-end shops
πŸ“ Lindenhof – hilltop place (used to be a Roman fort) with views, outside chess
πŸ“ GrossmΓΌnster – main protestant church (landmark of the city)
πŸ“ BΓΌrkliplatz
πŸ“ Opera House
πŸ“ WOW Museum
πŸ“ FIFA Museum

Start at the main train station and walk via the Bahnhofstrasse (main shopping street) until you reach the Old Town. Stroll through the Old Town (Altstadt) and walk up to Lindenhof to enjoy the views.

After that, keep walking to BΓΌrkliplatz on Lake Zurich. You can also check out the famous GrossmΓΌnster church and one of the museums.

Zurich is not as big, and my favorite part is wandering around the Old Town and sipping hot chocolate at the Lindenhof.

Visit Lindt Chocolate Factory

If you have some time and love chocolate, I recommend visiting the nearby Lindt chocolate factory. It’s located in Kilchberg, just a 10-minute train ride from Zurich. All the trains are included in your Swiss Travel Pass, so just hop on and travel.

After you arrive in Kilchberg, follow the signs and walk to the factory for an extra 10 minutes.

Enjoy your visit, taste some delicious Swiss chocolate, and get some pralines for the way back πŸ˜€ (my favorites are pistachio and coconut).

➑ Get your tickets to the Lindt Chocolate factory here.

Zurich’s Christmas Markets

Now, this is crazy, and I haven’t really experienced it anywhere else, but Zurich has Christmas markets right at the main train station – lol. So you’ll be greeted immediately by the Christmas vibe upon arrival.

But you know, it’s pretty busy at the station anyway, so I wouldn’t recommend spending much time there.

The best Christmas markets in the city are in the Old Town – Weihnachtsmarkt DΓΆrfli (the oldest one in the city), at the MΓΌnsterhof square (for Swiss artisan goods), and Zurich’s Christmas Village (has an ice skating rink) at the Opera House (SechselΓ€utenplatz).

PRO TIP: Don’t miss the Singing Christmas Tree at WerdmΓΌhleplatz square.

🍭 SPECIALTIES TO TRY: Swiss Fondue & Raclette cheese, roasted chestnuts, grilled sausaged (bratwurst), Swiss hot chocolate, GlΓΌhwein, ZΓΌrcher Tirggel (traditional Zurich biscuit), buy Swiss artisan goods at the MΓΌnsterhof square
πŸ“ LOCATION: Weihnachtsmarkt DΓΆrfli (in the Old Town), MΓΌnsterhof square, Zurich’s Christmas Village (at the SechselΓ€utenplatz square), Singing Christmas Tree (at the WerdmΓΌhleplatz square)
✨ ZURICH CHRISTMAS MARKETS DATES: 20th of November until the 24th of December 2025

🏠 Where To Stay In Zurich

Here are the hotels I recommend in Zurich for your stay. I suggest staying close to the train station, so it’s easy for you to move around with the luggage:

➑ Townhouse Boutique Hotel
➑ Central Plaza
➑ Hotel Felix
➑ Hotel Schweizerhof Zürich

DAY 2. ZURICH – LUCERNE

Hello in Zurich – I hope you enjoyed the city yesterday and got the most out of its sights and markets.

Today, it’s time to move to another city, which I think is the most beautiful Swiss city. Let’s head to Lucerne.

In the morning, take a direct train from Zurich to Lucerne. It’s fully included in your Swiss Travel Pass. Don’t forget to validate your pass before you travel. I recommend leaving Zurich early in the morning, so that you have the entire day to explore Lucerne.

πŸš‡ Train ride from Zurich to Lucerne takes 40 – 50 minutes (included in your Swiss Travel Pass).

Sightseeing In Lucerne

Welcome to my favorite Swiss city – Lucerne. Check in to your hotel, if your room isn’t ready, leave your stuff at the hotel, and head to the center.

Here are the things I suggest to see:

πŸ“ Chapel Bridge
πŸ“
Old Town
πŸ“
Lion Monument
πŸ“
Glacier Garden
πŸ“
Chateau GΓΌtsch
πŸ“
Lakeside Promenade
πŸ“
Walk on the medieval walls and see the Zytturm Tower

The ideal plan for your time in Lucerne is to admire the Chapel Bridge and walk through the Old Town and alongside the lake.

Then, take a funicular (train) to Chateau GΓΌtsch. The funicular station is called GΓΌtsch, and you can walk there from the center (about 5 minutes). The ride is included in your Swiss Travel Pass.

You’ll get incredible views of the entire city, lake, and the mountains around Lucerne.

After, you can check out the Lion Monument and the Glacier Garden (entrance included in your Swiss Travel Pass) to learn about the glaciers and how they formed the landscape of Switzerland.

NOTE: You can also join this free walking tour to explore the city with a local, if it’s available that day.

Lucerne’s Christmas Markets

I feel like the Christmas markets just keep getting better as you travel through Switzerland. There is just something so magical about spending time at Lake Lucerne, walking through its markets and smelling all the goods from the stalls while sipping gluhwein as you explore.

The main markets are located at the Franziskanerplatz. My favorite markets are at the Inseli Park by the lake. Or you can also head to the smaller Schweizerhof Christmas Market at the Hotel Schweizerhof (a traditional Swiss 5* hotel).

🍭 SPECIALTIES TO TRY: Swiss Fondue & Raclette cheese, Γ„lplermagronen (Swiss alpine dish – like Mac&cheese with apple sauce), roasted chestnuts, grilled lamb skewers, Swiss hot chocolate, GlΓΌhwein, Lebkuchen (gingerbread)
πŸ“ LOCATION: Franziskanerplatz (in the city), Inseli Park (at the lake), Schweizerhof Christmas Market
✨ LUCERNE CHRISTMAS MARKETS DATES: 15th of November until the 24th of December 2025

🏠 Where To Stay In Lucerne

These are my favorite hotels in Lucerne (especially the first one):

➑ Hotel Des Alpes
➑ Hotel des Balances
➑ Hotel Baslertor
➑ Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern

DAY 3. LUCERNE

It’s time to enjoy Lucerne and its surroundings for a bit. I recommend enjoying the lake and cruising for a while + combining it with 1 mountain excursion.

Alternatively, you can make a day trip to the Jungfrau region and visit the highest train station in Europe, called ‘Jungfraujoch‘. I personally think this excursion is more interesting than Mt. Pilatus, but it also involves more travel. So you can decide which one fits you better.

Mt. Pilatus Excursion

In the morning, if the weather is nice, head to Kriens (a small town near Lucerne, just a 10-minute bus ride away). I suggest enjoying one of the best mountain excursions in Switzerland today – Mt. Pilatus.

You can take a cable car from Kriens, then change at the middle station, FrΓ€kmΓΌntegg, to reach the top of Mt. Pilatus. The second cable car is pretty cool – they call it the ‘Dragon Ride‘.

You’ll get a discount on the entire return ticket with your Swiss Travel Pass – buy the tickets at the cable car station in Kriens.

Enjoy the breathtaking views from the top of Mt. Pilatus of the entire Lake Lucerne region.

NOTE: I don’t recommend this excursion if the weather isn’t nice or it’s too cloudy, since it’s mainly for the views.

There is a restaurant with a hotel on the top, an exhibition about the Dragon Ride cable car, and a viewing point. You could buy some food/snacks at the main train station in Lucerne before and enjoy them at the top of the mountain.

Whenever you’re ready, you can take the same 2 cable cars back to Kriens and return to Lucerne.

Mt Pilatus excursion from Lucerne
Mt Pilatus excursion Switzerland

Jungfraujoch Excursion

Jungfraujoch is a breathtaking mountain excursion in the Jungfrau region, where you can experience the most epic cable car and train rides and see the largest Swiss glacier. It’s an experience unlike any other.

The only downside is that it’s farther away (2.5 hours by train from Lucerne) and quite pricy. But despite it, it’s still 100% worth it. So if you can, I highly recommend you make this journey.

In the morning, catch the panoramic trainLuzern-Interlaken Express‘ from Lucerne to Interlaken Ost. Then change to a regional train to Grindelwald Terminal. That’s the cable car station where your excursion starts.

NOTE: Get a return ticket to Jungfraujoch at Grindelwald Terminal – you’ll get a discount with your Swiss Travel Pass, so instead of the full price (usually around 240 CHF, you’d pay around 150 CHF).

You’ll take the iconic Eigerexpress cable car and the Jungfrau train to the top of Jungfraujoch – the highest train station in Europe. There are several activities you can enjoy there, such as a cinema, a viewing point to see the glacier, walking through an ice cave, and a tunnel with information about how the station was built.

On the way back, definitely stop in Grindelwald to enjoy the town a bit- it’s one of my favorite Swiss mountain towns.

Then head back to Lucerne on the same trains via Interlaken Ost.

NOTE: This is a full-day excursion, so you won’t have any time to do anything else (like the boat ride). Skip it if the weather isn’t good.

Boat Ride On Lake Lucerne

When in Lucerne, one of my favorite activities is simply taking a boat ride on the lake. It’s fully included in your Swiss Travel Pass – so why not take advantage of it?

In the afternoon, take a boat from Lucerne (the pier is close to the train station) and cruise for about an hour to Vitznau. Get off in Vitznau and walk around for a bit. Then take a boat back to Lucerne.

➑ Check out the boat schedule between Lucerne & Vitznau here.

DAY 4. LUCERNE – MONTREUX

Hello in Lucerne. I hope you had an amazing time in the area and tried everything delicious at the Christmas markets.

Today, I’ve got a special surprise for you – we’re heading to Montreux on Lake Geneva, which is bringing the Christmas vibe to the next level.

If you want, take some time today to explore more of Lucerne, or even take a boat ride on the lake (if you missed it yesterday). Whenever you’re ready, take a train to Montreux.

The train leaves every hour on the hour – this connection has only 1 change in Lausanne. It takes 2 hours & 50 minutes to get to Montreux.

πŸš‡ Train ride from Lucerne to Montreux takes 2 hours & 50 minutes (included in your Swiss Travel Pass).

Montreux & Christmas Markets

Welcome to Lake Geneva – you’ve just made it to the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

πŸ’‘ FUN FACT: Did you know that Switzerland has 4 official languages? German, French, Italian, and an ancient language called Romansh.

Check into your hotel and relax for a while. Then head to the town, to the lake promenade, to enjoy the Christmas markets and vibe of this town.

Montreux is a small town and there isn’t that much to do, but I love its Christmas markets. If you want to do any sightseeing, I recommend the following:

πŸ“ Montreux Lakeside Promenade
πŸ“ Chillon Castle – walk alongside the lake for about 40 minutes (entrance is free with your Swiss Travel Pass)
πŸ“ Queen The Studio experience
πŸ“ Montreux Museum

Montreux’s Christmas Markets are located at the lakeside promenade around Place du MarchΓ©. Around 170 chalets are selling delicious food and artisan products, including jams, handcrafted ornaments, and soups.

And the surprise I was talking about? There is a Flying Santa above the lake πŸ˜€ – you can see him every day at 5:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 7:00 PM. Don’t miss it, it’s so cool, especially if you’re traveling as a family with children.

🍭 SPECIALTIES TO TRY: Swiss Fondue & Raclette cheese, Γ„pfelchΓΌechli (fried apple rings), roasted chestnuts, vin chaud (GlΓΌhwein)
πŸ“ LOCATION: Lakeside promenade around Place du MarchΓ©
✨ MONTREUX CHRISTMAS MARKETS DATES: 20th of November until the 24th of December 2025

🏠 Where To Stay In Montreux

These are the hotels I suggest in Montreux for you:

➑ Hotel Eden Palace au Lac
➑ Hotel Mona
➑ Royal Plaza Montreux

DAY 5. MONTREUX – ZERMATT

All right, last but not least – what would be visiting Switzerland in winter without experiencing its winter wonderland, right? I would love to take you to a charming mountain town where you can experience this magic.

Are you ready to see the majestic Matterhorn and have fun on the Swiss slopes? Let’s head to Zermatt.

If you didn’t have time to visit the Chilon Castle yesterday, you can still make it today. It’s so nice to walk alongside the lake for about 40 minutes to reach the castle. And then you can take a bus back to Montreux and head to Zermatt. But you can also skip it and head to Zermatt right away.

πŸš‡ Train ride from Montreux to Zermatt takes 2 hours & 40 minutes – change trains in Visp (included in your Swiss Travel Pass).

Zermatt

Welcome to Zermatt – the car-free village of Switzerland! You can really only access the town by train. Anyone with a car must leave it at the last town called TΓ€sch, and take a train to Zermatt.

Once you arrive, check into your hotel and relax for a while.

In the afternoon/evening, I recommend walking around the town and having dinner.

Head to the city center to get some mulled wine or hot chocolate, visit the Matterhorn museum (free of charge with your Swiss Travel Pass), and walk through the traditional ‘Hinterdorfstrasse‘ street.

I highly recommend walking up to the Matterhorn Viewpoint – you’ll enjoy stunning views of the town and the Matterhorn.

Zermatt has a great culinary scene and it’s one of the best places to try the Swiss Fondue or indulge in a fine-dining experience.

Head to Whymper Stube (for Swiss Fondue) or SchΓ€ferstube (for great Raclette), or to Potato Fine Food Restaurant (fine-dining experience).

🏠 Where To Stay In Zermatt

Zermatt has such amazing hotels – just picture yourself in a heated outdoor pool or a hot tub, surrounded by the winter wonderland and with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn.

It’s an experience on its own, so I highly recommend booking a hotel with a spa here. These are my favorite hotels in Zermatt that can give you such an experience:

➑ Alpine Hotel Perren
➑ la couronne Hotel & Spa
➑ 22 Summits Boutique Hotel
➑ Relais & Chateaux Schânegg

Zermatt in winter views of Matterhorn and charming lights

DAY 6. ZERMATT

Let yourself fully soak up the atmosphere of Zermatt and its surrounding mountains today.

You’ve got several options:

πŸ“ Go skiing in Zermatt
πŸ“ Visit Gornergrat & enjoy sledding
πŸ“ Head up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

If you’re a skier/snowboarder, I highly recommend that you go skiing in Zermatt. It’s my favorite ski resort in Switzerland, and the skiing here is just another level – I had the absolute best time ever. You can ever cross from Switzerland to Italy within one day. Have fun!

If you don’t want to go skiing, you can go sledding. Head up to Gornergrat on the train, see the massive glaciers, and then go sledding between the stations Rotenboden and Riffelberg. Have a delicious Swiss lunch in Riffelberg with views of the Matterhorn, then return to Zermatt to enjoy a spa.

Or, you can enjoy a mountain excursion to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Take the 3S cable car above the glaciers to the highest cable car station in Europe. Walk through an ice cave, enjoy the views, and soak it all up.

NOTE: If you don’t want to do any of these trips, head to Findeln village and enjoy a special Fondue lunch on the slopes in a restaurant called Chez Vrony. Make a reservation as it’s very busy.

Enjoy the day in Zermatt and get the most out of it! Spend the afternoon in a nice spa with an outdoor pool and relax for a while.

DAY 7. ZERMATT – GENEVA

Today, you can choose what to do – either leave Zermatt in the morning and head to Geneva. Or spend the day in Zermatt, enjoying whatever you missed yesterday, and head to Geneva in the evening.

My recommendation would be to stay longer in Zermatt (especially if you want to enjoy 1 more mountain excursion or an extra day of skiing). To be completely honest with you,

Geneva isn’t as nice as the other Swiss cities we’ve covered on this itinerary. But I’ve included it as a point with a good airport to fly out of back home.

It’s enough time to enjoy Geneva for 3 – 4 hours, including its Christmas markets. Until then, you can still enjoy Zermatt.

So, whenever you’re ready, head to Geneva.

πŸš‡ Train ride from Zermatt to Geneva takes 3 hours & 50 minutes – change trains in Visp (included in your Swiss Travel Pass).

Sightseeing In Geneva

Geneva is a banking hub and the second-most-expensive place to live in the country.

It’s also the most international city in the world – about 40% of its population is foreign-born. The city hosts 40 international organizations and is the Swiss birthplace of watchmaking.

Besides luxury shopping (which is probably the main activity why people come to this city), there are a couple of things to explore:

πŸ“ Lake Geneva & Jet d’Eau – its a giant fountain in the lake
πŸ“ Old Town (Vieille Ville) & St-Pierre Cathedral
πŸ“ English Garden & Flower Clock
πŸ“ Botanical Gardens (Jardin Botanique
πŸ“ Palais des Nations (UN & International Organisations)
πŸ“ Patek Philippe Watch Museum

Spend the time walking around the Old Town and seeing the cathedral and its tiny cobblestone streets.

After that, walk along Lake Geneva (they call it Lac LΓ©man here) and see the Jet d’Eau.

You can also visit one of the gardens or the watch museum (since the city is the birthplace of watchmaking in Switzerland) to see displays and learn more about this tradition.

And of course, enjoy the local Christmas markets.

Geneva’s Christmas Makrets

NoΓ«l au Quai (that’s how they call them here) is located at the lakeside promenade, specifically at the Quai du Mont Blanc. The markets here are very charming, especially at night, when all the lights reflected in the lake make it super beautiful.

Try local chocolate truffles, spiced cookies, vin chaud, and crΓͺpes.

This is the end of our itinerary – I hope you enjoyed every single second. Congratulations!

You’ve visited the most beautiful places and Christmas markets in Switzerland + enjoyed a little Swiss winter wonderland in the mountains. I hope you’re taking great memories back home and bringing a bit of a Swiss Christmas spirit with you.

🏠 Where To Stay In Geneva

In Geneva, I suggest staying in one of those hotels right at the train station. It’s very convenient, close to the city center and the lake, and you can take a train straight to the airport tomorrow (only a 7-minute ride).

I recommend the following hotels:

➑ Hotel Suisse
➑ Hotel Cornavin
➑ Hotel Bernina Geneva

Do You Have Less Or More Days In Switzerland?

I’ve made it a 7-day Switzerland Christmas market itinerary, as I feel it’s a good time to hit the most beautiful spots and markets, and even add some Swiss winter wonderland with mountain excursions. This is my favorite and base itinerary; I recommend you follow it.

However, if you have fewer or more days, you can adjust a few things.

So, here are a few suggestions for an itinerary if you have 3, 5, or 10 days:

Here is what I recommend you do if you only have 3 days in Switzerland during Christmas time.

2.Lucerne
3.Lucerne – Montreux – Zermatt

Practical Tips For Visiting The Swiss Christmas Markets

I have some practical tips for your visit to the Swiss Christmas markets, too. So check them out below:

Best Time To Visit Swiss Christmas Markets

The best time to explore these markets is around mid‑December – everything feels extra cozy, festive, and full of Christmas magic. Most markets, though, open in the last week or so of November and stay open until Christmas, so you can really visit whenever it suits you best.

Don’t miss the singing Christmas tree in Zurich, Inseli Park in Lucerne with its lights reflected in the lake, and the Flying Santa in Montreux.

Weather & Temperatures

The weather is usually on the chilly side, so pack cozy jackets, gloves, and warm shoes. Rain is quite common (not as much as in other countries though), but it never spoils the festive atmosphere.

Temperatures usually range from around 5Β°C/41Β°F down to 0Β°C/32Β°F. Some days might get a bit warmer, around 8–10Β°C/46–50Β°F, but evenings can drop back to freezing. Don’t worry though – a cup of GlΓΌhwein will have you feeling toasty in no time!

Collecting Christmas Mugs

Did you know you can take the Christmas mugs home with you? When you order GlΓΌhwein or any hot drink at the markets, it’s served in a traditional festive mug.

Every market has its own unique mug, and they’re absolutely gorgeous – honestly, one of my favorite parts of visiting Christmas markets in Switzerland.

There’s a small refundable fee for the mug (usually around 5 euros) on top of your drink. You can return it to get your money back, or simply keep it as a souvenir. You can even go back to the stall later for a clean mug if you like.

I’ve collected mugs from every market I’ve visited, and I absolutely love my growing collection. It’s so much fun, and they make sweet little gifts to bring home too. Check out my collection in the picture below!

European Christmas markets mugs

Have Cash With You

It’s always a smart idea to keep some cash. While most markets and stalls accept cards these days, you’ll still find a few that are cash-only.

And if you spot something adorable to bring home, you don’t want to miss out just because you don’t have cash. So, keep some handy – whether it’s for tasty treats, handmade crafts, or even the local bathrooms!

Still, Switzerland does the best job when it comes to card payments unlike other countries like Germany or Austria.

Book Your Accommodation In Advance

No need to stress about accommodation – you’ve got this! Even though it’s a busy season, all the cities on this itinerary are fairly large, so there are plenty of places to stay. Even if you start planning in November, you’ll still find options.

That said, if you want the best spots and the coziest hotels (especially those I recommended in the itinerary), it’s smart to start looking and booking at least 2 months in advance.

BONUS: European Christmas Market Itinerary

Want to experience the magic of Europe’s Christmas markets – all in one trip? I’ve put together a European Christmas market itinerary that takes you through 5 countries, visiting the most charming and festive markets in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, and Belgium.

Click the image below to explore the full itinerary and make this holiday season one to remember!
