3. JUNGFRAUJOCH – TOP OF EUROPE
✨ Visit Europe’s highest train station and stand on the Top of Europe.
I fell in love with Jungfraujoch. It’s one of the best Swiss mountains, which you shouldn’t miss. It’s mainly thanks to the beauty of the entire Jungfrau region and the excursions it offers.
Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe, is 3,454 meters above sea level (11’332 feet). It comprises two words, ‘Jungfrau,’ meaning virgin, and ‘joch,’ which translates as pass. This pass sits between two mountains – Mönch and Jungfrau, which perfectly explains its location and untouched nature.
It’s a meteorological station that measures precipitation, forecast weather, and study the largest glacier in the Alps, Aletsch Glacier.
Jungfraujoch also hosts the highest train station in Europe, often called the ‘Top of Europe‘.
Where Is Jungfraujoch Located?
Jungfraujoch is located between the famous Mönch and Eiger mountains in the Jungfrau region. It’s close to Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland.
How To Get To Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe?
Your excursion to Jungfraujoch will start in Interlaken, the adventure capital (specifically at the train station Interlaken Ost). You have three options to get to the Jungfraujoch from Interlake Ost.
Getting To Jungfraujoch From Grindelwald -Eiger Express
The first option is to take the train from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald. Get off 1 stop before the final stop called the Terminal. From there, hop on the Eiger Express Gondola and ride to the Eigergletscher. Then you’ll take the red Jungfrau railway up to Jungfraujoch.
PRO TIP: Taking the Eiger Express Gondola is the fastest way to get to Jungfraujoch.
Getting To Jungfraujoch From Grindelwald
The second option is to train to Grindelwald (the final stop). From Grindelwald, take another cogwheel train to Kleine Scheidegg. From there, take the red Jungfrau railway, which will take you to the Jungfraujoch. It’s slower than taking the Eiger Express gondola, but it’s a stunning ride.
PRO TIP: Going up to Jungfraujoch, take the Eiger Express Gondola. Returning from Jungfraujoch to Grindelwald, take the train from Kleine Scheidegg.
Getting To Jungfraujoch From Lauterbrunnen
The third option is to take a train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen. Once you get to Lauterbrunnen, a yellow-green train (called Wengeneralp) will be waiting for you on the opposite side of the train platform. So get on this yellow-green train, direction Kleine Scheidegg.
Once you get to Kleine Scheidegg, you’ll take the red Jungfrau railway to Jungfraujoch again.
PRO TIP: It’s the most beautiful ride in the Jungfrau region.
Best Things To Do In Jungfraujoch
✅ JUNGFRAUJOCH 360°C CINEMA – watch a short video about Jungfraujoch and be driven into the Aletsch Glacier and mountains around. After, learn about the activity of the meteorological center.
✅ SPHINX OBSERVATORY – go to a lift to take you to the terrace. You will have 360° spectacular views of the whole area, looking down the valley, and see the largest glacier in the Alps, Aletch Glacier.
✅ ALPINE SENSATION – get to know how locals built the railway and discover a little bit of the history of the whole place.
✅ ICE PALACE – walk through the ice cave, watching the art of icy sculptures while feeling like you are in an Ice Age movie.
✅ GLACIER PLATEAU – walk outside of the station and take a photo with a Swiss flag. Get other stunning views of the glacier and the entire area.
✅ LINDT SWISS CHOCOLATE HEAVEN – explore the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven. You will see how they make the chocolate and after you can, of course, buy some chocolate treats in the shop.
✅ JUNGFRAU PASS – outside of the station, there is a Fun Park, where you can do some sledding, skiing, or snowboarding (just in summertime).
✅ MÖNCH HUT – if you feel like hiking, surrounded by glaciers and massive mountains, you can walk through the Jungfrau Pass to see the Mönch hut, a traditional Swiss mountain hut. Walking on the snow at such a high altitude is not so easy. But it’s an easy hike that takes about 45 minutes. Have some Swiss lunch up there.
How Long Does It Take To Visit Jungfraujoch?
Plan 5 to 6 hours for the visit to Jungfraujoch if you also want to see the Mönch hut. If not, then 4 to 5 hours will be enough (including the train rides from Interlaken).
Is It Worth Visiting Jungfraujoch?
Yes, Jungfraujoch is worth visiting. It’s my second favorite mountain excursion in Switzerland. Even though it might seem like a tourist trap, it’s not.
The best time to visit Jungfraujoch is in the morning, taking the first train from Eigergletscher. This way, you’ll enjoy Jungfraujoch to the fullest without major tourist crowds.
Best Time To Visit Jungfraujoch
The best time to visit Jungfraujoch is definitely in summer. You can do the summer activities on the Jungfrau Pass, and the Mönch Hut is open. In the wintertime, there are no summer activities, and the Mönch Hut is closed.
To avoid tourist crowds, visit Jungfraujoch in June and September.
Jungfraujoch is one of the mountains that you can also visit during the winter in Switzerland.
PRO TIP: The best time of day to visit Jungfraujoch is in the morning. Take the first train departing from Eigergletscher in the morning. This way, you’ll have the best experience and have Jungfraujoch for yourself without tourist crowds.

If you have the Jungfrau Travel Pass or Bernese Oberland Pass, you’ll only have to pay an extra fee of 63 CHF for the train section between Eigergletscher and Jungfrajoch. Everything else is included in your pass.
Jungfraujoch Excursion Price
- Full price for return ticket: around 220.00 CHF (adult) – prices might vary depending on the route you take
- Price with Swiss Travel Pass: 139.60 CHF

4. SCHILTHORN – PIZ GLORIA
✨ Walk in the footsteps of James Bond on the top of the Swiss mountain.
Schilthorn is my favorite mountain in Switzerland and in the Jungfrau region. Seeing the incredible scenery and clouds, revealing the panorama of three mountain peaks in front of me (Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau), blew my mind away.
This mountain is a must on your list. I recommend you wake up early for this excursion and take the first cable car after it starts to operate. So you can avoid masses of tourists.
This spectacular mountain was featured in the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. It was the hideaway of Blofeld, Bond’s enemy, whom they named Piz Gloria for the time they were making the movie. So, let’s explore it together.

Your day starts again in Interlaken Ost, where you’ll hop on the train to Lauterbrunnen.
When you reach Lauterbrunnen, walk out of the train station, and just across the road, there will be a bus number 141, direction Stechelberg. Take this bus.
