3.JUNGFRAUJOCH – Top of Europe
Visit Europe’s highest train station and stand on the Top of Europe.
I fell in love with Jungfraujoch, and it is one of the top mountains in Switzerland for me, which you definitely shouldn’t miss. It is probably thanks to the beauty of the entire Jungfrau region and the excursions it offers. Jungfraujoch, also called the Top of Europe, is located at 3,454 metres above sea level. It is composed of two words, ‘Jungfrau,’ meaning virgin, and ‘joch,’ which translates as pass. This pass is situated between two mountains – Mönch and Jungfrau, which perfectly explains its name and its unspoiled, almost untouched nature. It is also a place for the observatory, which you can see on the photo below.

Jungfraujoch Location
Jungfraujoch is located in the Jungfrau regionm between the famous Mönch and Eiger mountain. It is close to Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland.
How to get to Jungfraujoch
Your excursion to Jungfraujoch will start in Interlaken, the adventure capital (specicially at the train station Interlaken Ost). You have three options.
1.option for getting to Jungfraujoch
The first one is to take a train to Grindelwald, from Grindelwald take another cogwheel train to Kleine Scheidegg. From there, take the red Jungfrau railway, which will take you to the Jungfraujoch.
2.option for getting to Jungfraujoch
The second option is to also take the train from Interlaken to Grindelwald. But this time, get off 1 stop before the final stop, which is called Grindelwald Terminal. From there, hop on the Eiger Express Gondola, which will take you right up to the Eiger Glacier Stop. Then you will take the red Jungfrau railway up to Jungfraujoch.
3.option for getting to Jungfraujoch
The third option is to take a train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. Once you get to Lauterbrunnen, a yellow-green train (called Wengeneralp) will be waiting for you right on the opposite side of the train platform. Get on this yellow-green train, direction Kleine Scheidegg. Once you get to Kleine Scheidegg, you will again take the red Jungfrau railway up to Jungfraujoch.
Activities to do in Jungfraujoch
- Alpine Sensation – experience the Alpine Sensation, where they play movies and display images. You can also learn a lot about what they do in the observatory and within the meteorological station. Besides, you will get to know how they were building the railway and discover a little bit of a history of the whole place.
- Jungfraujoch Terrace – go to a lift, which will take you up to the terrace. You will have 360° spectacular views of the whole area, looking down the valley, while being surrounded by glaciers.
- Ice Palace – walk through the ice cave, watching the art of icy sculptures, while feeling like in an Ice Age movie. After, there is a corridor that leads outside. When you come out, you will find yourself in the Jungfrau Pass encircled with glaciers.
- Jungfrau Pass – outside of the station, there is a Fun Park, where you can do some sledging, skiing, or snowboarding (just in summertime).
- Mönch Hut – if you feel like hiking, being surrounded by the glacier and massive mountains, you can walk further up through the Jungfrau Pass to see the Mönch hut. Walking on the snow at such a high altitude is not so easy. After each move, you are just catching up on your breath. But believe me, it is worth doing it. You will get to the hut in an hour.
- Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven – explore the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven. You will see how they make the chocolate and after you can, of course, buy some chocolate treats in the shop.

Duration of the mountain excursion
Plan 5 to 6 hours for this excursion, if you also want to go up to the Mönch hut. If not, then 4 to 5 hours will be enough (including the train rides from Interlaken).
Best time to visit Jungfraujoch
The best time to visit Jungfraujoch is definitely summer. Not only can you do the summer activities on the Jungfrau Pass, but the way up to the Mönch Hut is a lot more accessible. There are also higher chances that the weather will be nice in summer.

Price of the Jungfraujoch Excursion
- Full price for return ticket: around 220.00 CHF (adult) – prices might vary depending on the route you take
- Price with Swiss Travel Pass: 139.60 CHF
- Check out the Jungfrau Travel Pass for additional discounts

4.SCHILTHORN – PIZ GLORIA
Walk in the footsteps of James Bond on the top of the Swiss mountain.
Schilthorn belongs to the top mountain excursions in the Jungfrau region. After seeing the incredible scenery and clouds, revealing the panorama of three mountain peaks in front of me (Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau), my mind was blown away. It is a must on the list of mountains in Switzerland you have to visit. I recommend you wake up early for this excursion and take the first cable car after it starts to operate. You can avoid masses of tourists.
This spectacular mountain was featured in the James Bond movie: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. It was a hideaway of Blofeld, Bond’s enemy, which they named as Piz Gloria for the time they were making the movie. Let’s explore it together.

Schilthorn Location
It is located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, above the Mürren village, overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley, near Interlaken.
How to get to Schilthorn
Your day starts again in Interlaken Ost, where you will hop on the train to Lauterbrunnen.
When you reach Lauterbrunnen, walk out of the train station, and just across the road, there will be a bus number 141, direction Stechelberg. Take this bus. After about 14 minutes, you will see a huge cable car running up the mountain. This is the stop Stechelberg Schilhornbahn, where you get off the bus. And that is where our excursion starts.
You will now take the following cable cars:
Stechelberg station – Grimmelwald station – Mürren station – Brig station
Stop for a while and enjoy the thrill walk on the side of the Brig station. The views are breathtaking, and you have to slightly overcome your fear to do it. But you have to do it.

If you ever have enough of those stunning views, continue with another cable car, which will take you up to the Schilthorn mountain.
Activities to do in Schilthorn
- Interactive exhibition, ‘Bond World 077’ – learn about the scenes from the James Bond movie and information, where different parts were shot here.
- 360° Restaurant – this restuarant was the first one built at such a high altitude, almost 3000 metres above sea level, at the time it was constructed. Have some nice drink while enjoying the views.
- Swiss Skyline Terrace – get other stunning views on the whole mountain range, as well as the Bernese Oberland region laying below.

Duration of the mountain excursion
You can plan to spend between 3 to 4 hours doing a Schilthorn mountain excursion.
Best time to visit Schilthorn
The best time to visit Schilthorn is the summertime. Simply because the weather is much nicer, I think you will enjoy it more with these incredible views.
Price of the Schilthorn Excursion
- Full price for return ticket: 108.00 CHF from Stechelberg (adult) & 85.60 CHF from Mürren (adult)
- Price with Swiss Travel Pass is: 42.80 CHF

Schilthorn as a day trip from Zürich, Lucerne or Interlaken + Skip-the-Line Ticket

It will be the cheapest option and the best value for money. There are no good offers for day trips to Schilthorn from these 2 cities. That’s why I highly recommend you get the Swiss Travel Pass. Remember, this excursion is included in it.
Or, if you are staying in Interlaken, this day trip is a great option as well:

5.GLACIER 3000°
Immerse yourself into the Glacier of Swiss Alps doing a Glacier Walk & hop on the world’s highest toboggan run.
I dare to say that Swiss people are crazy, in a good way, of course. I just cannot get how they built all these cable car stations on the mountain peaks and railways through the valleys and mountain ranges. So let’s give them honour, visiting another exciting mountain in Switzerland. The Glacier 3000° offers a panoramic Peak Walk at an altitude of 3000 metres above sea level. Walk through the 107 metres long suspension bridge, the only one connecting two mountain peaks in the world.

Glacier 3000° Location
It is close to the Swiss city of Gstaad, located 58 kilometres from Montreux and 70 kilometres from Interlaken, the adventure capital.
How to get to Glacier 3000°
Follows the road ‘Gsteigstrasse from Gstaad direction Les Diabetes and stop at the cable car Glacier 3000°. If you are travelling to train, you get to get to Gstaad by train. From there, change to a bus B 180 (direction Les Diabetes) and get off at the station called ‘Col-du-Pillon, Glacier 3000°’.
Activities to do in Glacier 3000°
- Peak Walk – walk through the 107 metres long suspension bridge connecting 2 mountain peaks. Do you dare to walk through without holding on to the bridge? This is the best spot to get incredible views of other mountains in Switzerland, such as Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and Matterhorn, which I am also mentioning in this list.
- Glacier Walk – take the Ice Express chairlift from Scex Rouge station to the Glacier and start this spectacular walk through the Glacier. - The Ice Cathedral – also known as ‘devil’s hole,’ is a natural ice cave, 20 metres long. It is not always accessible since the snow and ice melt in the summertime, so it might be full of water or covered in snow at another time of the year. But if it is open once you are there, you have to check it out as it is a rare and unique place.
- Glacier Flight – get even higher above the mountains and enjoy the panorama of the Swiss Alps more. Reservation is necessary.
In the wintertime, you can go skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing at Glacier 3000°.

Duration of the mountain excursion
Plan 3 to 4 hours if you don’t want to do the Glacier Walk. In case you want to walk, then plan 5 to 6 hours for the entire mountain excursion.
The best time to visit Glacier 3000°
As with other mountains in Switzerland, the best time to visit Glacier Glacier 3000

6.MATTERHORN – GORNERGRAT
Drive to the highest situated hotel in Europe and enjoy stunning views of Switzerland’s highest mountain.
The Gornergrat railway started operating back in 1898 and is one of the oldest ones in Switzerland. It will take you towards Matterhorn, showing you a stunning view of other Swiss peaks that are over 4000 metres high, including the highest mountain of Switzerland (Dufourspitze 4,634). Enjoy the ride on the cogwheel train, which was the first fully electrified cog railway globally, and hike around the Lake closest to Matterhorn.

Today’s railway has a regenerative braking system, which saves energy while going downhill. This makes up for the ride up. You can step foot inside the highest-located hotel in the world, Kulmhotel Gornergrat, which has shops, a restaurant, and an astronomical observatory. Or even spend the night in the hotel, star-gassing at night.
Gornergrat Location
The excursion on the Gornergrat railway starts in Zermatt.
PRO TIP: Zermatt is the starting/ending point of the fabulous Glacier Express route, which is one of the best panoramic trains in Switzerland. So if you want, you can ride on Glacier Express to Zermatt and then stay a couple of days in Zermatt, doing a Gornergrat excursion or the 5 Lakes Trail.
