23 Best Places To Visit In Europe In Winter
Here are the places I suggest you visit in Europe in winter, from the most winter wonderland places, to warm spots if you’re not into cold and skiing and snow, to the best cities to visit for Christmas markets in December:
1. Zermatt
I have to start with my favorite winter destination in Europe – Zermatt. This car-free village is located in southern Switzerland, and yes, you can only get there by train. It’s one of the best winter wonderland destinations in Europe.
Zermatt offers a wide range of activities from mountain excursions to sledding, some of the best ski slopes in the world, an amazing food scene, great hotels with outdoor spas, and the perfect winter atmosphere.
WINTER EXPERIENCES IN ZERMATT:
β Matterhorn Glacier Paradise Excursion
β Gornergrat Mountain Excursion

2. Dolomites
Another favorite of mine is the Dolomites in northern Italy. I fell in love with this place so much that I actually moved here. Ever since living here, I‘ve been exploring all the corners, skied in all of the 12 ski regions, and soaked up the sun on the top of the mountains.
Visit the base towns like Selva di Val Gardena, Cortina d’Ampezzo, or Bruneck, and immerse yourself in their wintery vibe.
Dolomites in winter are next level: you can make mountain excursions (my favorites are Sass Pordoi or Marmolada), drive on the mountain passes, relax at the hotels with delicious food, go luxury shopping, and indulge in the Italian cuisine in the rifugios (mountain huts).

3. Rovaniemi
If youβve ever dreamed of a true winter fairytale, Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland will steal your heart. Itβs officially known as the hometown of Santa Claus, and trust me – it feels like stepping straight into a Christmas movie.
You’ll cross the Arctic Circle and hopefully chase the magical Northern Lights. Enjoy husky sled rides, reindeer safaris, and cozy log cabins with fireplaces where you can warm up after a snowy adventure.
Rovaniemi isnβt just about Christmas charm – itβs also about the stillness of Arctic nature, the pinkish glow of polar sunsets, and that peaceful feeling of being somewhere completely untouched. Itβs one of those places that reminds you how magical winter can truly be.

4. Lofoten Islands
If youβre looking for an even more remote place, the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway will completely sweep you off your feet. Imagine colorful fishing cabins nestled between sharp mountain peaks, frozen fjords, and the soft northern light glowing over the sea – pure magic, seriously.
You can explore tiny fishing villages like Reine or Henningsvær, and drive along scenic coastal roads that reveal new views around every curve.
I suggest taking a ferry from Bodo to Moskenes, then taking a little road trip to A, Reine, Ramberg, Nusfjord, and Svolvaer, and finishing at the airport in Harstad/Narvik.
From there, you could even fly to Tromso (or drive) and continue your magical Arctic adventure.

It’s quite similar to Zermatt. You can enjoy skiing in some of the best ski resorts in Europe, visit the highest European mountain (Mt. Blanc), see glaciers, or stay cosy next to the fireplace in the town, sipping a coffee and eating local specialities.
It’s a perfect gateway to winter in Europe.

When Europe is wrapped in snow and scarves, the Canary Islands are basking in sunshine. This little group of Spanish islands off the coast of Africa is where you go when you crave warmth, golden beaches, and a bit of adventure – even in the middle of winter.
Each island has its own personality: Tenerife, with its volcanic landscapes and lively beach towns; Lanzarote, with its otherworldly lava fields; Gran Canaria, for charming villages and mountain hikes; and Fuerteventura, with endless sand dunes and turquoise waves.
Days here are filled with sunshine, coastal walks, swims in the Atlantic, and long, lazy lunches with ocean views. Temperatures are around 20-22Β°C /68 – 71Β°F throughout the winter.

It’s the first one on the list, because I truly believe it has the most magical Christmas markets in Europe. I might be a little biased, but you need to visit and see it for yourself.
If you can, plan your visit on the 6th of December to experience Krampus – a crazy Austrian winter tradition.
Apart from its markets, Salzburg is a stunning city – a gateway to the Austrian Alps full of history and music. You can enjoy a Sound of Music tour, or make some of these day trips from Salzburg.

For all the Dracula lovers out here, head to Romania. Transylvania is one of the regions in the country, mainly famous for Bran Castle (Dracula). It’s a perfect winter escape to learn more about Romanian history and culture, try new foods (definitely don’t miss Papanasi), and take a little road trip.
I’ve been guiding my travel groups in Romania and Transylvania a lot, and the most beloved places from my travelers are always Brasov, the nearby Carpathian Mountains, Sibiu, Sighisoara, PeleΘ Castle, and fortified churches in Viscri.
